Virtual XoT
The Lock as a virtual machine
Virtual XoT is the same Lock as in the XoT-S1, but as software. It runs as a virtual machine on your hypervisor or in a cloud service. Customers have used Virtual XoT in production since 2023.
How it works
The same Lock, without hardware
Virtual XoT comes as a ready-made virtual machine image. You download it from support.xertified.com and start it on your hypervisor. Then you register the Lock in the XMS, in the same way as other Locks.
It is the same software as in the XoT-S1. So Virtual XoT gives you both Remote Access and Hide and Protect. The Lock connects outbound to the XoT-Bridge, so no inbound ports need to be opened.
Platforms
Where Virtual XoT runs
VMware and Proxmox
Ready-made packages are available for VMware and Proxmox.
Hyper-V and KVM
Virtual XoT can also run on Hyper-V and KVM.
Cloud services
Virtual XoT can run in any cloud service. We recommend Azure.
What is protected
Virtual machines, containers and physical equipment
You decide how the Lock is connected. It can protect all of this:
Other virtual machines
Virtual machines on the same host are protected through a virtual switch.
Containers
Containers on the same host are protected in the same way.
Physical equipment
Through a network card, the Lock reaches equipment outside the host, such as PLCs and HMIs.
Whole subnets
One Lock can protect a whole subnet, with all the devices in it.
When it fits
Three common uses
Virtualised control systems
SCADA and historian servers often run on the same host. This can also apply to virtual PLCs and HMIs. Virtual XoT protects them without extra hardware.
Servers in the cloud
Servers for video surveillance and IoT sensors often run in the cloud. There you can run many Locks, without hardware such as the XoT-S1 or Teltonika routers.
Industrial PCs at machine builders
Do you build machines or connected products? With Virtual XoT on an industrial PC, you get secure connections in a simple way.
Operations
You choose who runs it
Virtual XoT runs on a host. The host is the server that the hypervisor is installed on, or a server in a cloud service. You choose who looks after the host and the operations.
You run it yourselves
You are responsible for the host and the operations, for example with your own IT department.
A partner runs it
One of our partners looks after the host and the operations for you.
Common questions
Do we need an XoT-S1 as well?
No. Virtual XoT is a complete Lock. An XoT-S1 can still suit equipment that is not in a virtualised environment.
Which hypervisor should we choose?
The one you already use. Ready-made packages are available for VMware and Proxmox.
Is Virtual XoT used in production?
Yes. Customers have used Virtual XoT in production since 2023.
How do we pay for Virtual XoT?
As with other Locks, you pay a licence per protected machine. Contact us for a price.
Do you already have a virtualised environment?
Tell us which hypervisor or cloud service you use, and we will help you get started.
