How XoT differs from other solutions

You are comparing XoT with what you already have. It may have worked well for many years. Here you can see the differences, including those that favour the other solutions.

XoT compared with a VPN

A VPN is an encrypted connection that links the user to a network. XoT links the user to specific equipment. That affects what the user can reach.

XoT compared with a jump server

A jump server gathers all remote access in one place. That gives you an overview, but the server also becomes a target for attackers.

Short answer

When XoT is not the right choice

XoT does not suit every situation. Here are four examples.

  • The user needs the whole network. An employee who needs to reach many systems in the network should have a VPN. XoT is designed to give access to specific equipment.
  • You already have a jump server that works well. If it records sessions and is well maintained, the gain is smaller. The big difference concerns what the user can reach.
  • You need to inspect the content of the traffic. XoT decides who may send traffic. It does not inspect what the traffic contains.
  • The equipment is new, up to date and already protected. In that case you have already solved the problem another way.

Older equipment in a network that is not divided into segments is harder to protect. This is especially true when several vendors need access. That is where XoT is most useful.
